About the class
Our Merit Class is a pre-professional training programme for students aged 14-18, designed as a bridge between youth theatre and further performing arts education. Entry is by audition only, ensuring a focused, high-level environment where students are challenged to refine their craft, develop industry-standard skills, and prepare for drama school auditions and professional opportunities.
This class delves into advanced acting technique, exploring the work of key practitioners, past and present. Students will engage in monologue work, movement training, devising, directing, and writing, alongside structured sessions in audition etiquette, text analysis, and performance discipline. With smaller class sizes and two industry-professional tutors, students receive specialist attention and tailored feedback, with additional guest workshops from theatre-makers, and industry professionals.
The Merit Class is highly performance-focused, with students representing GAA in National Theatre Connections, Youth Theatre Arts Scotland Festival, and the Chrysalis Festival, gaining invaluable experience in professional-level productions. In 2019, our group won National Theatre Connections and performed Chaos by Laura Lomas at the National Theatre’s Dorfman Theatre in London—one of many highlights in our history of excellence.
Many past students have successfully gained places at prestigious institutions such as The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, LAMDA, Bristol Old Vic, NCLan Arts, and the University of Oxford, going on to build careers in the performing arts.
With higher expectations, a structured approach, and a focus on preparing students for the next stage in their journey, the Merit Class is the perfect opportunity for young performers serious about their craft to push their limits and take their training to the next level.

MERIT ACTING TECHNIQUE

ENTRY TO THIS CLASS IS BY AUDITION ONLY.
AUDITIONS ARE HELD REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
OPEN TO ALL AGED 14-18
We offer all of our new students a 2 week free drama trial. We think it is very important that our new students are given the chance to experience what goes on here at Glasgow Acting Academy. Throughout those 2 weeks the student on trial will get to experience what goes on in a normal class. They will be treated like a regular student, although if they don’t feel comfortable or confident enough to take part, then they are more than welcome just to watch. We never ask our students to do anything that we ourselves would not.
